March 12, 2010Nora Lee Keeling Allen

Nora Lee Keeling Allen of Pinetta, died at Madison Hospital on March 4, 2010.

She was born May 8, 1915, in Madison County, to Robert and Emma Sullivan Keeling. She was predeceased by her husband, James Hampton ""Hamp" Allen, and her brothers, Robert Ernest Keeling, Harvey Luther Keeling and Raleigh Leon Keeling.

Mrs. Allen is survived by her sister, Mazie Keeling Hammock, of Jacksonville and numerous nieces and nephews.

At her request, no services are planned


March 12, 2010Charlie J. Washington, Jr.

Charlie J. Washington, Jr., of Tampa, 56, died March 4, 2010 in Tampa.

Funeral services are scheduled Saturday, March 13, 2010 at 11 a.m. at St. Matthew's AME Church in Greenville with burial at the church cemetery. Visitation will be at the Ganzy Funeral Home (850-973-3267) from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, March 12, 2010.

Survivors include his grandmother, Rosa Lee Williams; brother, Lance (Barbara) King; sisters, Loretta (and husband) Williams, Sandra Fox (James), Marion King (Carrie); and uncles, Rev. Earnest O. Washington (Carrie), Joe Lewis Washington (Yvonne), Wilbert Williams (Shirley) and John Randall (Betty); aunts, Williephene Jennings, Johnnie M.M. Mack, Virginia Clemons (Berton), Flossie Blackshear (Cleveland), Mae Francis (Johnny) Davis and Ann (J.D.) Williams; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.


March 10, 2010Basil Victor Edmondson

Basil Victor Edmondson, age 88, died Wednesday, March 3, 2010 in Ormond Beach.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 8, 2010, at Beggs Funeral Home, Madison Chapel with burial at Macedonia Cemetery. Visitation was held from 1-2 p.m. at Beggs Funeral Home.

Edmonson moved to Madison in 1980, coming from Miramar. He worked as a Radio Technician for National Airlines, and was a member of First Baptist Church of Madison.

He is survived by one son, Ralph Victor Edmondson of Hollywood; and two daughters, Emma Jean Edmondson and Shirley Adel Edmondson of DeBary.


March 10, 2010Jayme Renee Oder

Jayme Renee Oder, 30, of Jennings, died Tuesday evening, March 2, 2010 at her home.

Services were held Saturday, March 6, 2010, at 3 p.m. at the Chapel of Beggs Funeral Home in Madison. Visitation was from 1-3 p.m. at the chapel. The Rev. Jackie Watts, pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church in Madison, officiated.

Mrs. Oder was a native of Whigham, Ga., born March 5, 1979. She was a 1997 graduate of Pine Forest High School in Pensacola. She graduated from Bainbridge College in Bainbridge, Ga. in 1999 and Valdosta State University in 2001. She earned her Master's degree in Education from Troy State University in 2006. Mrs. Oder was a teacher at Lake Park Elementary School in Lake Park, Ga. She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Madison. She was married to Steven Oder, of Madison, in 2002. Mrs. Oder is the daughter of Wanda Jackson of Pensacola and Curt VanLandingham of Whigham, Ga.

She was preceded in death by two grandparents, the late Durwood Ezell and the late Myra Nell VanLandingham of Whigham, Ga.

Survivors, in addition to her husband and parents, are her daughter, Bella Kate Oder, Jennings; a sister, Hillary Gullatt and husband Jason of Pensacola; two nieces, Kyleigh Gullatt of Pensacola and Brittany Cave of Monticello; grandparents, Frances Ezell and Leon VanLandingham of Whigham, Ga.; mother-in-law, Sally Oder of Jennings; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Ron and Cathy Cave of Monticello.


March 05, 2010Mr. John Lee Pickles

Mr. John Lee Pickles, 67, passed away Sunday, February 28, 1010, at Wayne Memorial Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer.

John was born on May 11, 1942 in Lamont, to Lucille Gilliard Pickles of Greenville, and the late Alex Pickles, Sr. He was retired from the US Air Force after twenty years of service where he reached the rank of Master Sergeant. John was also retired from Georgia Pacific after 25 years of service. He was an active member of the Wayne County Master Gardener Volunteers Association. He was the Wayne County Coordinator for the NC Blue Bird Society and was a member of the North American Blue Bird Society. John maintained an eleven house Blue Bird Trail at Georgia Pacific. He was a member of the Republican National Committee, a member of the Neuse Regional BeeKeepers Association and the NC State BeeKeepers Association. The love of John's life was his family, gardening, beekeeping and blue birds. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Goldsboro, NC with Rev. William "Bill" Ordelt officiating. Inurnment will follow in Good Shepherd Columbarium.

In addition to his mother, John is survived by his wife of thirty one years, Virginia Turner Pickles; his daughter, Karen Pickles Perry and husband, William Percival Perry of Greenville, NC; his sons, Robert Hunter and wife, Carol of Raleigh, NC, John Hunter of Mount Olive, NC and Jeremy Hunter and wife, Wendy of Goldsboro, NC; his siblings, Martha (Ann) Taylor of Tallahassee, , Roy Charles Pickles (Ann) of Wake Forest, NC, Wanda Joy Roberts (Stanley) of Lexington, SC, Anderson Eugene Pickles (Debra) of Monticello, , Alex Pickles, Jr. (Mary) of Buckhead, Georgia, William LeGrand Pickles (Susan) of Pinetta, ; Phillip Wayne Pickles (Linda Faye) of Greenville, , Edna Lucille Hamrick (Carl) of Greenville, , Deborah June Cox (Harold) of Alvin, Texas and Terrence "Terry" David Pickles (Vickie) of Plant City, his grandchildren who were the lights of his life, Robert and Aaron Hunter of Raleigh, NC, Keelin and Kolton Hunter of Goldsboro, NC and John Hunter, Jr. of Clayton, Michigan and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

March 05, 2010Alex E. Mathis

Alex E. Mathis, age 74, of Skipperville, Ala. died Monday, March 1, 2010, at his home.

A memorial service for Mathis will be held at a later date in Madison, .

Holman Funeral Home of Ozark is in charge of arrangements.

Mathis was born December 8, 1935 in Madison, to the late Willie James Mathis and Lydia Webb Mathis. He worked with Suwannee Farms for twenty years in O'Brien, and with Coastal Paving and Sod in Pinellas Park, . Mathis farmed in Suwannee County, until his retirement. They have made their home in Skipperville for the past three years. Mathis attended Skipperville United Methodist Church and was baptized on February 18th. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, James Howarth; one grandson, Jeremy White; three brothers, Charles, James, and Dalton Mathis.

Survivors include his wife, Billie Ann Grant Mathis of Skipperville, Ala.; and children, Sonie Thompson, Anna Kavt and husband Craig, Jenie Whitlock and husband Steve, Wade Mathis and wife Pricilla, Tracey Mathis and wife Chris, John Mathis and wife Robin, Paul Eastman and wife Monta, Charlie Eastman, Pam Hughes, and Wally Howarth and wife Holli; and two sisters, Edith Thomas and Linda Davis; one aunt, Leona Bass29 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

David W. Taylor, age 71, died Monday, March 1, 2010, in Glen Cove Nursing Pavilion in Panama City.

Graveside funeral services will be Friday, March 5, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville. Visitation was Thursday, March 4, from 6-8 p.m. at Beggs Funeral Home, Madison Chapel.

He was born October 29, 1938 to Luther and Alice Maynard Taylor in Greenville. He lived most of his life in Madison County and moved to Youngstown eight years ago. He worked at Metal Products in Madison as a line foreman.

He is survived by one daughter, Janice Hill and (Richard) of Youngstown; two grandchildren, Gary Hill, Jr. and Laura Fuller; and two great-grandchildren, Lee and Kayla Fuller.


March 03, 2010Virginia Mumford Adams

Virginia Mumford Adams, age 84, died Thursday, February 25, 2010, in Madison.

Funeral services were held Sunday, February 28, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Pine Grove Baptist Church, with burial at Pine Grove Cemetery. Visitation was held Saturday from 6-8 p.m. at Beggs Funeral Home.

She was born on October 27, 1925 to James and Hallie Mumford. She moved to Madison in 1960, coming from Augusta, Ga. She was a homemaker and a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church.

She is survived by two sons, James "Jim" Adams and (Cathy) of Tallahassee and Paul W. Adams and (Wanda) of Madison; three daughters, Grace Elaine Mangold and (Steve) of Elkgrove, Cal., Virginia "Ginger" Louise Bullard and (John) of Madison, and Sandra Lee "Sandy" Bochnia and (Edwin) of Madison; one sister, Hazel Crockett of McCormick, S.C.; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Adams, and two sons, Christopher "Chris" John Adams and Joseph D. Adams.


March 03, 2010Clara Lewis Sheffield Barrett

Clara Lewis Sheffield Barrett, age 87, died Sunday, February 28, 2010, at the Ogeechee Area Hospice House in Statesboro, Ga., after a lengthy illness. Her husband, Paul J. Barrett, Sr., and a brother, W.S. Sheffield, preceded her in death.

Clara was born in Madison on August 11, 1922, the daughter of Lewis Glosson and Alex Janie Gaston Sheffield. After graduating from Madison High School, she married Paul Barrett and moved to Willacoochee, Ga., where they began their ministry as a parsonage family. They served United Methodist Churches in Willacoochee, Morven, Bainbridge, Cairo, Brinson, Stapleton, Norman Park, Homerville, Pearson, Columbus, Valdosta and Hahira, Ga., during their 60 years of active service.

During this time, Clara worked as a representative for Stanley and Avon and as a jewelry shop clerk. She was recognized for her achievements as an officer in PTA and in United Methodist Women's activities. After the couple retired to Madison, she started her own baking enterprise and was known as the Cake Lady.

Clara is survived by five children: Virginia B. (Ginger) Jarvis of Madison; Joel Paul Barrett, Jr. (and Pat) of Ft. Stockton, Texas; Mira Lewis Barrett (and Donnie) of Portal, Ga., Susan B. Dunn (and Buddy) of Columbus, Ga.; and John Mark Barrett (and Juleanne) of Midland, Texas. She is also survived by fifteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. Other survivors include two brothers, James G. Sheffield (and Brunelle) of Madison; Eugene D. Sheffield (and Sue) of Norman Park, Ga.; two sisters, Alma Browning of Jacksonville; and Ruth Herndon of Madison.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 3, from 1-2 p.m. at Beggs Funeral Home, Madison, with interment following at 2 p.m. at Oak Ridge Cemetery with Richard Quackenbush officiating and James Howes assisting. A memorial service is scheduled for Monday, March 15, at Rocky Springs United Methodist Church north of Madison.

John Gordon Ashley, age 85, died Thursday in Madison Nursing Center

Funeral services were held Saturday February 27, 2010 at 3 p.m. at Grace Presbyterian Church with burial at Oak Ridge cemetery. Visitation was held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at his home.

He was born in Valdosta, GA and lived most of his life in Madison, Fl. He was a member of the Grace Presbyterian Church and was a farmer and worked as a salesman for Sale Ace Hardware in Madison. He was a Veteran of World War II and the Korean war, serving in the Marines.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years: Sidney Conner Ashley of Madison; 1 son: Don Ashley and (Tamara) of Madison; 2 daughters: Theo Meadows and (Steve) of Opelika, AL and Randi Ashley of Winter Park, Fl; 4 grandchildren: Steven Meadows Jr. and (Ashley), Conner Meadows, Sara Ashley and John Ashley IV.
