Aucilla Christian Academy's 11th grade AP U.S. History class took a field trip to Cumberland Island. This was intended to be an educational trip, but also a fun trip to reward students for their hard work. Cumberland Island provides a great cross-section of American history, from the initial settling of the island by the Timucuan Indians to the extravagant building of Gilded Age industrialists. Spanish, French and English colonists impacted the development of the island. Gen. James Oglethorpe gave the island its name despite the Spanish having already named it San Pedro almost 100 years earlier. James Oglethorpe, Nathanial Green, Henry Lee III and Thomas Carnegie all called Cumberland home at one time or another.
