The Madison Education Association Credit Union Board is now under new leadership. Mark Akerman, principal at James Madison Preparatory High School, was recently appointed as a member of the seven person board and was quickly named as board president. The board is responsible for oversight and advisement of the credit union which was founded in 1965. As president, Akerman will lead the board's monthly meetings. His current appointment is for a three year term with an unlimited number of terms available.
Membership in the Madison Education Association Credit Union is available to all employees of the Madison County School Board, North Florida College and local charter schools including James Madison Preparatory High School and Madison Creative Arts Academy. Members can participate in savings and loan programs offered by the credit union.
Akerman, a Madison native who returned home last year, was a natural choice for the position because of his financial and educational background. Akerman holds two Bachelor's of Science degrees from Appalachian State University in both Applied History and History/Teaching. His experience in education ranges from a classroom teacher to head principal and from public to private schools. Additionally, Akerman has experience as a bank branch manager.
He states that the reason he chose to be on the board was because he wanted to be involved in the community more. Gena Rae Shiver, the manager of the Credit Union, knew Akerman from his early days in Madison. She cited his and his family's legacy in education and banking as excellent support for his board candidacy. Akerman will start his new position as president at the board's next meeting.
