Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Nu Omega Omega Chapter successfully concluded its inaugural “Building Our Economic Wealth” lecture series—a programmatic initiative under the 2022-2026 international theme of “Soaring to Greater Heights of Service & Sisterhood.” The series began on Thursday, March 9, with Florida A&M University Professor, Rashada Turner, MBA, who demonstrated a parallel between physical and financial fitness. The series continued on Thursday, April 13, with the topic of financial and estate planning, where participants learned strategies to assist them with translating their personal wishes into actionable planning steps. This segment was presented by industry leader, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., member, and Crossroad Capital Partners’ President, Padric H. B. Scott, AEP, CFP, ChFC, WMCP, CLU. The final event of the series was held on Saturday, May 20, and focused on educating members of the Chapter’s Pearls of Distinction youth mentee group. The discussion focused on the importance of saving, establishing savings accounts, financial literacy for students, and tools to prepare parents with guiding their children to a sound financial future. This final segment of the lecture series was conducted by Ivy Salters, Branch Vice President for Vystar Credit Union in Tallahassee.
As a component of educating and encouraging members to have a healthy perspective and an easy active approach to saving, the Chapter hosted a $5 Challenge Contest. Members of Nu Omega Omega Chapter were challenged to save their change totaling $5 increments in the form of coins or dollar bills and stash it away for 32 weeks. At the end of the period, contestants totaled their savings to determine if they were one of the top three “super savers” of the challenge. The winners of the challenge were: First Place, Monica Akins at nearly $1,300 in savings, Second Place, Deloris Jones with nearly $600 in savings, and Third Place, Zandra Gilley with over $300 in savings. This activity demonstrated how one could use their spare change to add up to big savings with little effort. Congratulations to all contest winners!
