What started several years ago has turned into a growing tradition. It began with the American Legion Post 224 from Cherry Lake placing U.S. flags around the Madison County Courthouse. These flags were sponsored by members of the community wanting to remember a certain family member who served, in honor of a particular veteran, etc. Then, as more and more flags were sponsored to be placed, the flags began appearing around Four Freedoms Park. This year, on Friday, May 26, volunteers placed over 300 flags, completely encircling the courthouse, Four Freedoms Park and along Base Street (U.S. Hwy 90) in front of Madison County Community Bank.
This project serves many purposes. First, it provides a stunning and patriotic display for Madison County and anyone passing through to see and enjoy. Second, it allows people to pay a lasting tribute to a deserving family member or citizen who may have served the country. This also serves as a fundraising project for the American Legion to carry out the many community service projects undertaken by the Post.
The dazzling display will be in place through Tuesday, July 4. When the flags are taken down, they will be presented to the individual sponsors at a later date.
