In August of this year, Madison County native, Maria Gilbert, soon after celebrating her 39th birthday, found herself in the hospital. During the week she was hospitalized, she received a diagnosis no one would ever want to hear. Gilbert was informed she had stage four ovarian cancer. A regimen of chemotherapy was immediately begun and still continues.
The future in terms of potential surgeries or how many more rounds of treatment will be necessary is uncertain. In addition to the medical uncertainty, the family is facing a very real financial uncertainty. Without adequate insurance, the cost of treatments and medical care have resulted in a financial burden to the family.
On Saturday, February 17, at Puddin’s Hatch Wagons, LLC, located at 1205 1st Ave. SE, in Steinhatchee, a Barbecue benefit will be held with a portion of the proceeds being donated to Maria Gilbert.
At the Barbecue Benefit there will be shopping, games and food.
