Bernice Bishop Pittman passed away at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Jan 11, at age 102 years and nine months, in Edgewater. She had been in Vitas Care for the past month. Pittman was the daughter of Jesse W. Bishop & Willie Elizabeth Lindsey Bishop of Greenville. She was the last survivor of the 12 Bishop children.
Bernice was the wife of Robert W. Pittman and had one daughter, Joyce Pittman (David) Menhennett, of Edgewater. Bernice lived for many years in Miami before moving to Edgewater in 2017. Bernice was a long-time Christian, having attended Christ Fellowship in Miami. Among her last words were, "I'm ready to go home. I want to see Jesus!"
She is survived by one daughter, Joyce Pittman (David) Menhennett; one grandaughter, Teresa DeLapp (Stephen) Tonks; one grandson, John Jerry (Twyla) DeLapp, Jr.; four great-grandsons: Mitchell and Brendan Tonks of Woburn, Ma.; and Ian J.R. DeLapp, and Jesse Drew DeLapp of Grand Blanc, Mi.; as well as many nephews and nieces with special recognition to nephew, Kenneth Hollowell, son of Beatrice Bishop Hollowell, who cared for her during her last month of life.
A viewing was held Monday, Jan. 15, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Beggs Funeral Chapel, in Madison, with funeral services on Tuesday, Jan 16, at 11 a.m., at Beggs Funeral Chapel, with interment at Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville, in the Bishop Family Plot. Lunch was served following internment at Faith Baptist Church, located at 134 SW Meeting Ave., in Madison.
