Bernita Butler Broome, age 74, of Hahira, Ga. passed away Thursday, April 13, 2017, at South Georgia Medical Center. She was born on September 2, 1942, in Royal Oak, Mi. to the late Lester and Edna Kelbly Butler. She was a member of Greggs Baptist Church, in Adel. She was a member of South Georgia Trail Riders and Madison County Trail Riders. She was one of the first women in Lowndes County to receive a general contractor’s license.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Phyllis Hathaway and a Granddaughter, Bernita Spells. Survivors include her daughter, Kim Patton, of Hahira; son, Larry Wade Griffis of Hahira; son, Eddie Jay Broome, of Hahira; grandchildren, Megan Spells (David Scalf), Eric Griffis, Bernita Griffis, Cecilia Griffis (Joe McDuffie) and Ethan Broome; sister & brother-in-law, Bonnie & Carlos Stowers, of Easley, SC; brother, Larry Butler, of Leesburg, Fl.; great-grand children, Sophia Scalf and Josiah Charles Griffis; and a number of nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 22, at 1:00 p.m., in the Valdosta Chapel of Music Funeral Services.
