On Wednesday, Jan. 18, the Madison Rotary Club heard from Senior Citizens Council of Madison County Director Lisa Blakely. She gave the club updates on the services provided to senior citizens in Madison County. Though the Senior Citizens Council primarily serves those 60 years of age or older, they do offer programs for the younger folks, especially during the holidays.
Besides the free weekday lunches that are offered each week, Alzheimer services are available, which help many patients live at home rather than moving into a nursing facility. They also give caregivers some occasional time off for what is often a round-the-clock job. The spacious facility of the Senior Citizens Council offers a wide variety of services to seniors, including a weight room and a dining area. There is also plenty of space for card or board games for everyone to enjoy. Blakely also noted that the lunch program is not based on financial need and is open to all seniors who are 60 or older. “Everyone has a great time talking and making friends while enjoying the many things the council has to offer,” said Blakely.
She closed by taking questions from the Rotarians. One question was posed about any needs the Senior Citizens Council might have. “We have some light fixtures that need replacing and a ramp that also needs replacing,” said Blakely “Any help in these areas would be appreciated.”
The Madison Rotary Club meets every Wednesday at 12 p.m., at the St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church's Villa Maria Parrish Hall, located at 186 NE Sumter St., in Madison.
