Thanks to a new weather station perched atop Boot Hill Stadium on the Madison County High School (MCHS) campus, where people can have a “hyper-local” run down of the weather conditions at the stadium. This is expected to provide valuable information because, as anyone familiar with Florida weather knows, weather conditions can vary from one side of town to the other. The station was installed on Tuesday, Feb. 28, and was expected to begin providing data on the internet that same day.
“This is a community project,” said Edward Mansouri, CEO of Tallahassee-based WeatherSTEM, the company installing the weather recording equipment. “This is going to greatly improve safety of the students, especially athletes.” There are rules governing weather conditions under which athletes can practice, especially when it comes to heat and humidity conditions. This weather station at Boot Hill Stadium will give coaches up to the minute information about conditions with pin-point accuracy, allowing them to determine if it is safe for athletes to work.
The weather station will also carry educational benefits for the students at MCHS. The system comes with 175 lesson plans tied to state standards in the area of science. “Students will be able to learn about meteorology, in addition to greatly improving the safety of students and the community,” said Ben Killingsworth, with the Madison County School District.
The new weather station is coming with a price tag of approximately $4,000, which covers the price of the equipment and installation. Customer support, etc., will be provided to the school district at no charge.
