On a dry-erase board hanging on the wall of Madison Automotive owner John May's office, a simple sentence is handwritten in blue. It states “Do what's right, not what's easy. - J. Mays.” From the open door of his office, Mays has a clear view of the four full-time employees - each
with an average of 15 years of experience - changing oil, replacing engines and transmissions, running diagnostics, servicing suspensions, and working on air conditioning and heating systems. Since his shop opened at 1411 S. SR 53 five months ago, Mays says that business has been great. His exact words were “We have been very blessed.” By “we,” Mays means he and his wife Joyce. Both were born and raised in Madison, and they have three adult children between them.
Mays received a degree in electronic engineering and computer science from ITT Tech. His goal was to be an electrical engineer for a major automotive company. Looking back, however, Mays is confident that he is exactly where he needs to be, helping the members of his community. “I have a passion for it,” Mays said, “not just the repair, but being part of the community, helping others, and doing something that I enjoy.”
