Aaron Webb, known to several as Pop, of Lee, passed away at age 82 on Tuesday, March 3, 2020, at Madison County Memorial Hospital. The Madison County native was born on Sept. 19, 1937 in Lee, Fla. He was the son of the late Rev. Carl A. Webb, Sr. and Gracie M. Hicks Webb. Aaron attended Enterprise School, Lee School and graduated from Madison High School. He married the love of his life, Norma Lee Downing of Pinetta, on May 23, 1959.
Aaron was a farmer, raising chickens and growing tobacco. Aaron was known for producing some of the finest tobacco in Madison County. If ever there was a self-made man, it was Aaron Webb. He never threw anything away. Most of his farm equipment he designed and built was out of scraps. In fact, the equipment he made worked better and lasted longer than anything you could buy. The Webb family was the 1983 Farm Family of the Year.
In addition to farming, Aaron drove a school bus for Madison County Schools for more than 20 years. There was no doubt in anyone's mind that Mr. Webb was in charge on that bus. Though he never made it a career, Aaron was also a licensed electrician.
Aaron was a follower of Jesus Christ. He and Norma were members of Midway Baptist Church in rural Madison County. For many years, Aaron was the song leader and Norma played the piano and organ. He also taught Sunday School for many years and served as a deacon.
In 1977, he and Norma, along with their children, moved into a new brick home that Aaron practically built by himself. It took him five years to complete it. Aaron made sure the house was well built and solid. Jokingly it has been stated the house was so well insulated that the heat from their first winter there was still in the house.
Aaron is survived by his children: Tori Webb Woods (Big Mike), of Lee; William F. “Bill” Webb (Sharon), of Tallahassee; and Margaret Pinkard Mathis NeSmith, of Valdosta, Ga. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Ashley Woods Hutchinson (Edward), of Lee, and Adam Woods, of Lee; great grandchildren: Kaitlyn Hutchinson and Hagan Hutchinson, of Lee; and Corey Walker (Emily), of Berea, Ky.; sister-in-law, Deanie Webb; and nieces: Nicole Webb Holeman and Grace Webb Willaford.
In addition to his parents, Aaron was preceded in death by his wife, Norma D. Webb; his brother, Lex D. Webb; his granddaughters: Traci Mathis and Kim Mathis; and his in-laws: William Green Downing and Ossie Lee McCullough Downing.
Funeral Services were held Saturday, March 7, with Rev. Tommy Thigpen officiating. Music was provided by Andy Daughtry. Burial followed at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Madison. Those who wish are encouraged to make a donation in Aaron's memory to the American Kidney Fund, www.kidneyfund.org.
