Monday, Aug. 21, is celebrated as National Senior Citizens Day in the United States. This celebration provides an opportunity to show appreciation for the senior citizens around the nation. According to the 2017 census, 47 million seniors live in the United States and it is projected that this number will double by 2060. That is almost 100 million senior citizens with years of knowledge and experience, as well as services provided to the communities around them. Senior citizens are classified in varying ages, but the average senior citizen classification age begins around 65, which is when Medicare benefits become available.
Here are five ideas to celebrate National Senior Citizens Day provided by the National Day Calendar:
1. Spend time with the senior citizens you know. Let them know they are appreciated and loved.
2. Today is a good day to volunteer at a retirement home. Share your smile with those who may not otherwise get a visitor today.
3. If you are a senior citizen, check for special discounts and promotions that may be offered at stores and restaurants in your area.
4. Talk to a senior citizen and learn about their life. Let them share their life story with you. You might be surprised on what you learn about them.
5. Use #SeniorCitizensDay to post on social media.
Show your appreciation for National Senior Citizens Day on Monday, Aug. 21!
