United Way of Big Bend hosted the Madison County Celebrity Waiters Night on Tuesday, Nov. 3 at Norris Cafe from 5:30-8:30 p.m. The special guest of the evening was Chef Art Smith. Chef Smith is from Jasper, Florida and has cooked for many celebrities and heads of state. He has cooked for Former Florida Governors Bob Graham and Jeb Bush, President Barack Obama and was the personal, day-to-day chef to Oprah Winfrey for 10 years. He is also the author of four cookbooks: Kitchen Life, Back to the Table, Back to the Family and Art Smith’s Healthy Comfort. At the Celebrity Waiters Night, Chef Art Smith spoke about his plans for the Chef Art Smith Southern Kitchen and Garden School at the Smith Mansion in Madison. He plans on opening the school in the spring of 2016. Class sizes will be small and the best part is that the classes will be free. The proceeds from the Celebrity Waiter Night will go to support the United Way of the Big Bend. The event raised $2,219.29 through generous tips and proceeds from the cake auction. The goal for this year’s campaign is $82,000. Some of the organizations that will benefit from the donations include Senior Citizens Council of Madison, Sickle Cell Foundation, Kids Incorporated of the Big Bend, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Elder Care Services, Ability 1st, American Red Cross, Big Bend Cares, America’s Second Harvest of the Big Bend, 2-1-1 Big Bend, Children’s Home Society, Consolidated Christian Ministries, Refuge House and Office of the Public Guardian.
