In the spirit of the long-held military tradition to “leave no man behind,” a ceremony was held on Thursday, Aug. 3, to honor five Madison County natives who were killed in action during the Vietnam War. Howard C. Barker, Arelinn L. Jackson, Johnny L. Moore, John T. Roberson and Alton L. Singletary were recognized for making the supreme sacrifice in combat in Southeast Asia.
Command Sgt. Maj. (R) Charlie Miller, with Vietnam Veterans of America, welcomed those in attendance at the ceremony at Four Freedoms Park, in Madison. After a few words, the families of the fallen heroes were each presented with a plaque and a pin to commemorate their honor and sacrifice. Taps were played and Madison County Commissioner Alston Kelley gave a few closing remarks.
A map of Southeast Asia with markings of where each of the Madison County natives fell was presented to the Treasures of Madison museum to be displayed and to serve as a remembrance of those Madison County residents who died in South Vietnam.
