Recently, Madison County attempted to acquire a YMCA center, but was turned down due to budget constrictions. However, Madison resident, Reginald Thomas, has a solution, and plans to address the County Commission at their bi-monthly meeting on Wednesday, April 22, at 4 p.m. He feels that if citizens would come together, a multiplex recreational facility could become a reality. He claims if 500 people invest $500 a piece, a total of $250,000, the building project could begin. Thomas suggests that, with enough community involvement, the sky is the limit. He dreams of an olympic-sized swimming pool with diving boards which would promote exercise and swimming competitions, a gymnastics court with instructors so kids don't have to go out of county for lessons, racket ball, basketball and even boxing, weight lifting and a spa with a sauna. The facility could even provide space for nighttime events such as concerts and shows. “The facility would be the yoke to bind this community together,” said Thomas. “However, without the community's support, we cannot make it happen.” If you're interested in voicing your opinion at the Madison County Commission meeting, call (850) 973-3179 to schedule a podium appearance, or simply attend a meeting to show your support or find out more information. If you wish to join with Thomas and explore the possibility of a recreational facility further, contact him at (850) 591-8014.
