As of Tuesday, May 30, the Kansas City Royals have a weak record of 21-29, 6.5 games behind the American League Central leading Minnesota Twins. While many in the Royals organization have not given up on making a playoff run later in the season, their dismal record one quarter of the way into the 2017 season and an injury to their best pitcher, Danny Duffy that could keep him sidelined for as much as eight weeks, makes a turnaround seem unlikely for the Royals. Some in Kansas City are beginning to wonder if it might be time to try and get the best deal they can for some of their veteran players who are about to enter into free agency, including Lorenzo Cain. Cain's contract ends at the end of this season, so the Royals may be looking to cash in on the trade value Cain carries ahead of the Monday, July 31 trade deadline.
So far this season Cain has a batting average of .258 with two home-runs, which is below his seven year career batting average of .285. So far this year Cain has an on-base percentage of .351. Although his batting numbers may be low so far this year, he still carries value defensively as a center fielder and with his speed. Cain has 12 stolen bases so far this season, which is third best in the American League.
If the Royals do opt for a trade, they are likely to find some interested parties. The National League East leading Washington Nationals have been rumored to have shown interest in Cain. The New York Mets could also be in the mix if Cain is placed on the trade market. As the trade deadline approaches, the Royals have a big decision to make where Cain is concerned. With Cain in the final year of his contract, and entering free agency, he could likely ask for a sizable contract. Whether the Royals would be willing to make that kind of investment in the 31 year old, seven-year veteran is uncertain.
Cain graduated from Madison County High School in 2003 and was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 17th round of the 2004 draft. He made his major league debut on July 16, 2010.
