During a special ceremony in the Madison County High School (MCHS) Media Center, on Thursday, Dec. 22, Jonathan Akins, a three-star defensive back with the Cowboys, signed his official Letter of Intent to further his football career with the Terrapins of the University of Maryland. Akins joins a 24-man signing class that ranks 34th nationally and sixth in the Big-10, according to a Washington Post article. Throughout his Cowboycareer, he developed a reputation as a defensive back and receiver.
During his time playing for the Cowboys, Akins amassed 509 receiving and 42 yards rushing. It was possibly his time spent as a return specialist that proved to be the most dangerous for opposing teams. Akins had 185 return yards with two punts and one kickoff returned for touchdowns.
Defensively, Akins had 73 total tackles, 52 of which were solo tackles. Akins also had nine
interceptions and one forced fumble.
Akins has been a three-sport athlete for the Cowboys, also playing basketball and running track. Last May, Akins placed fifth in the 100- meter dash, with a time of 10.7 seconds, at the state championships track meet.
The Maryland Terrapins had a regular season record of 7-5 (4-5 in the Big-10) and played North Carolina State in the Dukes Mayo Bowl on Thursday, Dec. 22.
Akins stated that he plans to study psychology at Maryland and hopes to
pursue a career as a therapist. He chose Maryland over offers from Rutgers and
Coastal Carolina. He is the son of Jonathan Akins, Sr. and Monica Kelly
