On Friday, Feb. 17, Zion Lamar, a Madison County High School (MCHS) senior became the latest Cowboy to sign his name on the dotted line to continue his athletic and academic career at the next level. Lamar signed to play football for the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan University (NCWU). Lamar's decision actually came after the official signing day, which was Wednesday, Feb. 1, but Lamar wanted to visit the school and meet with coaches before making his decision. “Zion actually did the smart thing by waiting to take a look at the school and meet with the coaching staff,” said MCHS Head Coach Price Harris. “I have no doubt that he will do very well there.”
Lamar has been a two-sport athlete at MCHS, playing both football and basketball. On the football team, Lamar spent time on both the offensive and defensive lines.
NCWU is a small, private university, located in Rocky Mount, N.C. The school, founded in 1956, is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and has a student population of just over 1,800 students. The school offers 33 undergraduate degree programs and boasts a 13:1 student to faculty ratio.
Lamar says he plans to study sports medicine in college. He is the son of Auntra' Lamar and Natalie Jackson.
