On Friday, Nov. 11, at 7:30 p.m., the Madison County High School (MCHS) Cowboys defeated the Indians of Baldwin High School by a final score of 42-7 to advance in the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Class 1A football playoffs.
The match began in a manner reminiscent of two prize fighters feeling each other out with each team driving down the field with short drives, but neither team landing a solid punch. Then in the latter part of the first quarter MCHS quarterback Tre Adams hit Derrick Staten on a 42 yard touchdown pass. The successful PAT brought the score to 7-0 in favor of the Cowboys with 3:37 left in the first period. The score remained 7-0 throughout the rest of the first quarter. After each team had drives that failed to produce points, the Cowboys had the ball on their own 20 yard line. That's when Staten scampered 75 yards down the field before being stopped at the Indians' five yard line. This set up a Cowboy first and goal at the five yard line. Then Adams hit receiver Kris Allen with a touchdown pass. With 5:38 left in the first half, the score was 13-0. Two possessions later Darrlyn Brooks picked off an Indian pass and ran the ball back to the Baldwin 2 yard line. On the next play, Kelvin Kegler powered the ball over the goal line for another Cowboy touchdown with 38 seconds left in the first half. This brought the score to 19-0. The Cowboys forced another turnover at the Baldwin 20 yard line. Then Drew Herring kicked a 31 yard field goal through the uprights to bring the score to 22-0 in the waning seconds of the first half.
The second half began with the Cowboys starting on their own 35 yard line. The drive featured a 40 yard run by Teryon Henderson to set the Cowboys up with first and goal. The drive was capped off by a Henderson touchdown run from the four yard line. A successful PAT brought the score to 29-0 with 9:38 left in the third period. Baldwin got on the scoreboard with a rushing touchdown by Isaiah Miller. The successful PAT brought the score to 29-7 with 5:07 left in the third quarter. Both teams then forced turnovers, but neither team was able to capitalize and the quarter ended with the score still at 29-7. Early in the fourth quarter the Cowboys recovered another Indian fumble at the Indian 21 yard line. The Cowboys drove down and then Henderson scored the next Cowboy touchdown with a five yard run. The PAT was good, bringing the score to 36-7 with 9:16 left in the contest. The Indians started their next drive on their own 39 yard line and moved the ball into Cowboy territory. Then the Cowboys picked off another Indian pass at the Cowboy 25 yard line. A couple of plays later, Adams hit Tinarus “Tank” Irvine for a 44 yard pass. The PAT sailed left and was no good. The score was 42-7 with just over six minutes remaining in the contest. The Cowboys would pick off yet another Baldwin pass to seal the game with a final score of 42-7.
The next game for the Cowboys will be the regional final against the Indians of Ft. White High School. The game will take place at Ft. White High School at 17828 SW State Rd. 47 in Ft White. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
