On Thursday, Mar. 9, the Madison County High School (MCHS) Cowboys opened their home baseball schedule by honoring Veterans with special seating, free concessions, etc. It was a fitting tribute to those who have served our nation with honor. The game against Suwannee County High School resulted in a tough loss for the Cowboys. After a scoreless first inning that saw impressive pitching from both teams, Suwannee went ahead 1-0 in the top of the second inning. Suwannee added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Although the Cowboys were able to get runners on base with five hits and two walked batters, they were
unable to capitalize; leaving all seven base-runners stranded. The game ended with Suwannee County still holding a 3-0 lead.
Dylan Bass, Drew Annett, Kris Allen, Jae Mitchell, and Drew Herring all had base hits for the Cowboys. The losing pitcher was Dylan Bass who gave up four hits, two earned runs, and walked two batters. Bass registered five strike-outs on the mound.
Then, on Friday, Mar. 10, the Cowboys traveled to Jasper to face the Hamilton County High School Trojans. The Cowboys took an early lead in the top of the first inning when Allen hit a double that scored Annett. The Trojans responded by scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Hamilton added to their lead with a two-run fifth inning. The Cowboys tightened the score in the top of the sixth when Annett hit a single with two outs, bringing home Jae Mitchell. This brought the score to 5-3, still in favor of the Trojans. Hamilton responded again with three runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning. In the top of the seventh, Trey Mitchell hit a single to drive in Lawson, but that was all the Cowboys managed to do. The final score was 8-4 with the Trojans coming out on top.
Annett went three-for-four at the plate with one RBI. Allen had two hits in two trips to the plate adding one RBI. Trey Mitchell also had a base hit in his one at-bat, driving in one RBI. Dustin Bass, Lawson, Allen, and Annett all saw action on the pitcher's mound. Bass gave up three hits and no earned runs, while throwing five strike-outs in two and two-thirds innings.
The next home game for the Cowboys will be on Friday, Mar. 24, when they take on North Florida Christian School. The first pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
