It could be the toughest test of the season when the Madison County High School (MCHS) Cowboys go north of the border to Brunswick, Ga., to face the Purple Hurricane of Fitzgerald High School, from Fitzgerald, Ga. This game is part of the annual "Border Wars" football classic, held each year. This year, seven games will pit some of the top football programs from North Florida with top programs from South Georgia. The games began on Thursday, Sept. 8 and will continue through Saturday, Sept. 10.
Fitzgerald High School comes in as the defending Georgia Class 2A State Champion, while MCHS is the defending Florida Class 1A State Champion. This could be one of the premier match-ups of the weekend, with both teams bringing undefeated records to the game. The 'Canes have a balanced offensive attack that depends on the passing game a bit more than other opponents the Cowboys have faced. O'Shea Akins, Jonathan Akins and the rest of the defensive backs will need to be at the tops of their game to keep the 'Canes from blowing down the field. The 'Canes also have a big offensive line, anchored by their 6' 1", 310-pound junior center Lovon Simmons, Jr. The 'Canes have a 3-0 record, coming into the contest on the heels of a dramatic, come from behind, win over the Raiders of Northeast High School, from Macon, Ga.
The Cowboys vs 'Canes contest will take place on Saturday, Sept. 10, at Glynn County Stadium, located at 289 Community Action Dr., in Brunswick, Ga. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. All the games of the 2022 Border Wars will be streamed live on www.news4jax.com. The Madison County vs Fitzgerald game will be followed by the game between St. Augustine High School and Coffee County High School. Coffee County High School is coached by former Cowboy Head Coach Mike Coe.
