Although the Madison County High School (MCHS) Cowboys football team has been forced to alter some procedures as they approached this season; the goal has remained crystal clear – a fourth straight state championship. The quest for that championship begins tonight on Boot Hill as the Cowboys face an old familiar foe, the Tigers of Jefferson Somerset Academy, from Monticello, Fla.
The Cowboys begin the season with a young roster with fewer players than they have had in the past, but the players are no less hungry and are ready to prove themselves. Fans can expect a strong rushing attack from the Cowboys, led by senior running back Robert Hiers. In spite of an ankle injury that kept Hiers out of several games late last season, he still amassed over 1,300 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns. Hiers isn't the only talented running back capable of contributing big numbers for the Cowboys. Expect Jacoleman Young and Greg Mitchell to factor in the Cowboys ground attack as well.
The Cowboys defensive unit could be the most talented unit Coach Coe has had in many years. Junior Ke'shaun Mitchell established himself as one of the premier linebackers in the region last season. Expect him to cause major woes for opposing offenses this season. Defensive backs Zarrion Robinson and Zechariah Jones have a year of experience under their belts and should be players to watch on both sides of the ball.
The events of the past several weeks concerning the COVID-19 virus put this football season in serious jeopardy. A split decision by the Florida High School Athletic Association gave teams the green light to move ahead with the season. "We are really excited and thankful to get the opportunity to play football this Friday," said MCHS Head Coach Mike Coe. "We often times take for granted the things we get to do daily and football is one of them. Our kids have worked hard and have followed all the safety protocols and I am proud of them for that. There is nothing like starting off against one of your arch rivals. Coach Reynolds is a great coach and will have the Tigers ready."
