Even though the Madison County High School (MCHS) Cowboys are no strangers to the playoff season, that doesn't mean the games are any easier or the stakes aren't any higher. When a team is in the playoffs, it is “win or go home.” Ahead of the Cowboys is an increasingly difficult gauntlet of competition that will hopefully culminate in a contest at Gene Cox Stadium, in Tallahassee, for the prize of being state champions.
First, the Cowboys will have to get past a group of hungry reptiles from the west. The Wewahitchka High School Gators are coming up to Boot Hill for the first round of the Class 1A playoffs on Friday, Nov. 12. The Gators are coming into town with a record of 4-6. That record should not be taken lightly. This is a team that can put big points on the scoreboard. In eight of their 10 games this season, the Gators have scored 30 or more points. Twice, they have held their opponents scoreless. Their offense features a quarterback and running back tandem that each have over 1,000 yards of rushing during the season. This will present a formidable challenge for the Cowboys' defensive unit.
“They’re very well coached,” said MCHS Head Coach Mike Coe of the Gators. “Coach Johns is as good as it gets in the weight room, in our state. They’re tough and physical. Their offensive scheme is unique and it stresses your eyes greatly. We have to play with great eye discipline and use our speed to our advantage.”
The Class 1A Region Two regional quarterfinal game between the Cowboys and the Gators will take place Friday, Nov. 12, at Boot Hill Stadium, on the MCHS campus. Per Florida High School Athletic Association policy, tickets are $8 each. Only state series passes will be accepted. You may also purchase tickets online at gofan.co. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
