In a shortened game on Friday, March 13, the Madison County High School (MCHS) junior varsity Cowboys were defeated by the visiting Wakulla War Eagles by a score of 10-4. The Cowboys were up 1-0 at the end of the first inning before the War Eagles scored three runs in the top of the second inning. The Cowboys managed to put a dent into the War Eagles' lead in the third inning, but the War Eagles were able to score five unanswered runs during the fourth and fifth innings.
After the fifth inning an announcement was made that, in accordance with the Florida High School Athletic Association, all games were cancelled immediately in light of the COVID-19 virus outbreak. According to one source with the MCHS baseball team, the decision Friday evening was made by the umpires' association. The MCHS softball game was played Friday evening because the softball programs are under a different umpires' association.
Gavin Bass and Josh Watts had base hits for the Cowboys.
Bass and Jackson Kendrick both saw time on the mound for the Cowboys, yielding eight hits, five earned runs, six walks and gathering four strike-outs.
Despite the cancelled varsity game, a festive mood continued throughout the ball park as a special "gender reveal" was planned for Head Baseball Coach Jason Fletcher and his wife Leslie, who are expecting the couple's second child. Fans and players alike chose to represent either "Team Pink" or "Team Blue" as everyone eagerly anticipated the revelation. When the time came, Coach Fletcher and his daughter Madi hit a special baseball that exploded in pink powder upon impact, signifying another daughter for the Fletcher family.
Congratulations and best wishes to Coach Fletcher, Leslie, big sister Madi and little sister Everly.
