After a struggling start to the season, the Madison County High School (MCHS) Cowboys varsity baseball team picked up their first win of the season with a 4-3 home victory over the Tigers of Blountstown High School on Thursday, March 4.
The Cowboys managed to score first when Parker Copeland received a free pass to home plate as a result of a walk by the Blountstown pitcher with the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning. The Cowboys added one more run in the bottom of the third. The Tigers scored one run in the top of the fourth, then pulled ahead with a two-run fifth inning. The Cowboys responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the fifth. The game remained scoreless through the top of the seventh, when the Cowboys sealed their first victory of the season.
Mike Mobley went two-for-two at the plate with a pair of RBIs. Kyler Richie had one hit in his three at-bats, with one RBI. JD Bryan is credited with an RBI from his first-inning walk.
Mitch Rutherford was the winning pitcher after going five innings on the mound, giving up four hits, two earned runs and three walks, while striking out six. Parker Copeland picked up the save, spending two innings on the mound, yielding one hit and no earned runs and picking up two strike-outs.
The Cowboys will return to Cowboy field on Thursday, March 11 for a game against the Bulldogs of Suwannee High School. The junior varsity game will begin at 4 p.m., followed by the varsity contest, at 7 p.m., on the MCHS campus.
