In another dominating performance the Madison County High School (MCHS) Cowboys shut out district rivals, the Trojans of Hamilton County High School by a score of 58-0 on Saturday, Oct. 8, in Jasper. The game had originally been scheduled to be played on Friday, Oct. 7, but was postponed due to Hurricane Matthew.
The Cowboys took the opening kickoff and after their first drive stalled, punted to the Trojans. The Cowboys' defense held the Trojans and forced a punt. After setting up shop on their own 48 yard line, the Cowboys' Derrick Staten ran down the sideline for a 52 yard touchdown run, with 8:42 remaining in the first quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, the Trojans failed to cover the ball and the Cowboys pounced on the ball, gaining possession on the Trojans' 31 yard line. On the very next play, Cowboy quarterback, Tre Adams connected on a 31 yard touchdown pass to Tay Robinson. On the next Trojan drive, the Cowboys blocked a punt, setting up the Cowboys offense on the Trojans' 26 yard line. Two plays later the Cowboys were once again in the end zone, this time on a 20 yard pass from Adams to Josiah Mitchell. This brought the score to 21-0 in favor of the Cowboys with 2:43 left in the first quarter. The second quarter began with another Cowboys touchdown pass. This time a nine yard toss to Darius Johnson. The Cowboys finished the first half of scoring when Tay Robinson shot through a huge hole opened up by the Cowboys offensive line and ran 15 yards for another Cowboys touchdown. The Trojans threatened to score late in the first half, however the Cowboys defense stiffened and stopped the Trojans on a fourth and five to take over on downs on the Cowboys 10 yard line. The Cowboys ran the clock out, bringing an end to the first half with the score 34-0 in the Cowboys favor.
The second half saw the Cowboys defense continuing to dominate the Trojans and the offense taking advantage of turnovers and good field position. With 8:25 remaining in the third quarter, Jonathan Alexander intercepted a Trojans pass at the Trojans 43 yard line. This set up another Cowboys touchdown pass, this time a 17 yard connection to Derrick Staten. After another Hamilton County three and out, Teryon Henderson found pay dirt for the Cowboys on a nice 48 yard touchdown run with 3:31 left in the third quarter. The score after three quarters was Cowboys-46 and Trojans-0. The fourth quarter began with another Trojan three and out. The Cowboys then drove down the field and scored on a 17 yard touchdown pass from back up quarterback, Travis Jay to Devin Brinson. Later in the quarter the Cowboys capped off their scoring with a 55 yard touchdown run by Tinarus “Tank” Irvine. This brought the final score to 58-0.
Statistically, the Cowboy’s numbers were as impressive as the score indicates. Scoring was passed around to several players with Teryon Henderson, Tinarus “Tank” Irvine, Derrick Staten, and Deonte “Tay” Robinson all scoring rushing touchdowns. Cowboy quarterback Tre Adams passed for 106 yards, completing five passes on 10 attempts with four of those completions being touchdowns.
