The Madison County High School (MCHS) Cowboys varsity baseball team took advantage of effective batting and a dominating pitching performance by JD Bryan on Monday, March 14, when they shut out the Trojans of Hamilton County High School, 10-0, at Cowboy Field. Bryan and his fellow Cowboys held the Trojans to just a .095 team batting average, while racking up nine hits and six walks on the offensive side of the field. The Cowboys went out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Cowboys had a big fourth inning, scoring four runs. Then, with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, a 9-0 lead and the bases loaded, Parker Copeland drew a walk, driving in the 10th and deciding run. Under the mercy rule, the game was called in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Mitch Rutherford went two-for-three at the plate, with one run batted in (RBI). Jackson Kendrick had three hits in his four at-bats, with one RBI. Copeland went one-for-three at the plate, with two RBIs. Tyrece Pryor had one hit in his three at-bats, with one RBI. Mike Mobley also went one-for-three, with one RBI. Blaydon Plain had one RBI, with a sacrifice fly ball and two free trips to first base. The Cowboys were also very effective traversing the baselines with 14 stolen bases.
Bryan went the distance on the mound for the Cowboys, giving up no earned runs and only two hits, with two walks, while striking out 13.
With the win, the Cowboys improved their record to 3-4 on the year. The Cowboys will be back in action on Monday, March 21, when they host the War Eagles of Wakulla High School. The action begins with the junior varsity game at 4 p.m., followed by the varsity contest at 7 p.m.
