On Thursday, April 22, the Madison County High School (MCHS) Cowboys varsity baseball team took the opportunity to honor three seniors on the team who were playing their final regular season home game at Cowboy Field. The Cowboys held off a seventh-inning rally to defeat the Chiefland High School Indians, 5-4.
The Cowboys went out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. The following two innings were scoreless, then the Indians were able to get on the scoreboard with one run in the top of the fourth. The Cowboys managed to add insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings, which turned out to be very fortunate for the Cowboys. The Indians put together a three-run rally in the top half of the seventh inning to pull within one run of the Cowboys. The Cowboys ended the game when Parker Copeland caught a fly ball in foul territory to put the Indians away.
Copeland went two-for-two at the plate, with one RBI. JD Bryan had one hit in three trips to the batter's box, with one RBI. Jahyren Lee had a crucial one-RBI double in his only at-bat.
Bryan was credited with the win after pitching six full innings, giving up three hits and one walk, striking out nine. Copeland and Lee came into the game in the seventh inning in relief roles on the mound, with Lee picking up the save.
The Cowboys finished the regular season with a 13-7 record. Next up is the Region Three, District Five tournament. The Cowboys are the number two seed in the tournament and await to play the winner of the Liberty County vs. Altha game which took place on Tuesday, April 27. The district tournament is being held at Liberty County High School, in Bristol, Fla.
