It was a winning evening at home for Madison County High School (MCHS) hoops on Tuesday, Jan. 16 as the MCHS boys' junior varsity, girls' varsity and boys' varsity teams all saw action against district rival Jefferson Somerset School, from Monticello. All three MCHS teams finished the evening with winning performances.
In the first game of the evening, the MCHS Cowboys junior varsity team defeated the Tigers with a 34-17 final score. The contest had a slow start with the Cowboys ahead 7-1 at the end of the first period. By halftime, the Cowboys were up 15-10. During the second half, the Cowboys continued to cruise to a final 34-17 victory.
In the second game of the triple-header, the girls' varsity team faced the Lady Tigers. This game was completely dominated by the Cowgirls. The Cowgirls held the Lady Tigers scoreless through the opening period while racking up 26 points. By halftime, the Cowgirls had extended their lead to 53-7. The game ended the same way it began, with the Cowgirls holding the Lady Tigers scoreless in the final quarter on their way to a 78-12 win.
The evening ended with the Cowboys' varsity team facing the Tigers' varsity team. The game started more competitively than the earlier games of the evening. The Cowboys were ahead 16-5 at the end of the first quarter. By halftime, the Tigers had tightened the score, but the Cowboys still held the advantage with a 27-18 score. The Cowboys turned up the heat in the second half, opening up a 58-21 lead at the end of the third period. The Cowboys continued to roll to a 72-26 final score.
The varsity Cowboys shot 47 percent from the field and scored 17 fast-break points. Individually, Vincenta Mitchell led the Cowboys with 21 points and six rebounds. Tre Adams had 12 points for the evening. Travis Jay had another double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Ken Hawkins went three-for-five from three-point range on his way to scoring 11 points.
