The Madison County High School (MCHS) varsity baseball team improved their record to 2-1 on Monday, Feb. 27, when they soundly defeated the Tornados of Bradford High School, 12-2, in front of an appreciative home crowd at Cowboy Field.
After quickly dispatching the Tornados in the top of the first inning with just seven pitches from starting Cowboy pitcher, Aiden Burnett, the Cowboys put together a six-run scoring binge in the bottom of the first inning that saw the Cowboys go completely through the batting order before the inning was ended. The Cowboys added three more runs in the bottom of the second inning and the rout was on. The Tornados did mange to get on the scoreboard with one run in the top of the third inning, but the Cowboys responded by adding three more runs in the bottom half of the third inning. The Tornados added one run in the top of the fourth, but the Cowboys kept the Tornados from touching down on home plate through the top of the fifth inning, when the game was called to an end.
Jackson Kendrick had one hit in his one at-bat, with two RBIs. Joshua Watts went one-for-three at the plate, with one RBI. Parker Copeland one hit in two at-bats, with two RBIs. Burnett went one-for-one at the plate, driving in two runs. Gavin Bass had one hit for his two plate appearances, with two RBIs. Evan Lago had two hits in his three times at-bat.
Defensively, the Cowboys had a perfect game with no errors. Burnett and Luke Hanners shared duties on the pitcher's mound, giving up two hits, two earned runs, six walks and striking out three batters.
Next up for the Cowboys will be a home game against the Wildcats of Valdosta High School, from Valdosta, Ga., on Friday, March 3. The first pitch is set for 6 p.m., at Cowboy Field.
