For Madison County High School (MCHS) senior Halie Wetherington, Tuesday, March 23, was an evening to remember. Wetherington was the one senior on the varsity Cowgirls softball team being honored during their Senior Night ceremony. Wetherington, one of the pitchers for the Cowgirls, made the most of the evening; going the distance in the pitcher's circle and hitting a solo home run, helping to lead the Cowgirls to a 16-2 victory over the Lady Trojans of Hamilton County High School, from Jasper, Fla.
The Cowgirls jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, then extended their lead by outscoring the Lady Trojans, 3-1 in the second. After that, the Cowgirls seemed to cruise to the victory by racking up a total of 11 hits while Wetherington turned in another impressive pitching performance.
Wetherington went three-for-three at the plate with a total of five RBIs, helped along by her solo home run. Brianna Thompson had two hits in her three trips to the batter's box, with one RBI. Carter Gore had two hits in her three at-bats, with three RBIs. Morgan Sevor went one-for-three, with one RBI. Mackenzi Bochnia had one hit in her two trips to the plate, with one RBI. Samya Wright had one hit in three trips to the batter's box, with one RBI.
Wetherington was the winning pitcher, pitching five innings before the game was called mid-way through the sixth inning. Wetherington gave up six hits and two earned runs, while walking one batter. Wetherington also struck out eight batters.
The Cowgirls will be back home at Cowgirl Field on Tuesday, March 30, for a game against the Lady Hornets of Lafayette High. The junior varsity game begins at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 7 p.m.
