There was no shortage of offensive firepower on display at Cowgirl Field on Tuesday, April 13, when the Madison County High School (MCHS) Cowgirls faced off against the Aucilla Christian Academy (ACA) Lady Warriors. Between the two teams, a total of 18 hits and 25 runs kept the score trackers busy all evening. When the clay settled, it was the Cowgirls who managed to come out on top, 16-9.
The Cowgirls went up 3-0 in the first inning, but the Lady Warriors were determined to make it a close game. The Cowgirls outscored the Lady Warriors 3-2 in the second inning. Then the Lady Warriors rallied with five runs in the top of the third inning. The Cowgirls responded with another three-run inning to regain a slight 9-7 lead. After a scoreless fourth inning, the Cowgirls scored five unanswered runs in the fifth inning, followed by two more Cowgirl runs in the sixth. The Lady Warriors were not quite ready to go quietly into that Tuesday night, when Isabella Gray sent a line-drive, two-run homer over the center-field fence. The Cowgirls were able to dampen any further Lady Warrior rally plans and held on to finish the contest, 16-9.
Shea Thompson went one-for-one at the plate, with one RBI. Carter Gore had one hit in her two at-bats, with two RBIs. Morgan Sevor had a big night with a bat in her hands, going three-for-four, with four RBIs. Mackenzi Bochnia had one hit in four trips to the batter's box, with two RBIs. Josie Driggers and Halie Wetherington also contributed to the Cowgirls' hit-fest.
Halie Wetherington was credited with the win in her final home appearance, capping off a great Cowgirl career at home. Shea Thompson picked up the save for the Cowgirls. Between the two pitchers, they surrendered eight hits, four earned runs and two walks. The Cowgirl pitchers fanned seven batters.
The Cowgirls are finishing the season on the road ahead of the district tournament, which will take place in Lake Butler, at Union County High School. The district tournament begins on Tuesday, April 27.
