The Madison County High School (MCHS) Cowgirls chalked up a crucial home district win over the Red Flashes of Hilliard High School on Friday, March 6. The Cowgirls went out to an early 2-1 lead after Abi Annett hit a two-run homer in her first at-bat of the evening. Hilliard pulled ahead 3-2 in the top half of the third inning. Morgan Sevor tied the score at three runs each with her solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Cowgirls pulled ahead during a two-run fifth inning. The Cowgirls added two more insurance runs, one of which was a solo homer by Gracie Galbraith, in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Red Flashes attempted to mount a come-back in the seventh inning, but the Cowgirls' defense slammed the door shut to seal the 7-4 victory.
Halie Wetherington went one-for-four at the plate with one RBI for the Cowgirls. Annett had one hit, a three-RBI homer, in three at-bats. Sevor was one-for-three with one RBI from her solo home run. Galbraith had two hits in her three trips to the plate with one RBI and a home run. Jocelyn Davis was one-for-three with one RBI.
Mackenzi Bochnia went the distance in the pitcher's circle, allowing six hits, two earned runs and six walks while striking out one.
The Cowgirls will be at home again on Friday, March 13 for another key district contest against Union County High School. The first pitch is set for 7 p.m.
