The last time the Madison County High School (MCHS) Cowgirls faced the Union County High School Lady Tigers, it was a night that many would like to forget. That was the final game the Cowgirls played before the 2020 season was prematurely brought to a close, thanks to the virus. To add to that disappointment, the Cowgirls were soundly defeated by the Lady Tigers on that mid-March evening. On Friday, Feb. 26, the Cowgirls traveled to Union County with the hopes of rectifying that memory. This time, however, the Cowgirls did not fare any better than the previous meeting. The Cowgirls fell to the Lady Tigers by a score of 20-6.
The score was tied at three runs apiece after the first inning. The Cowgirls went up by one run in the top of the second inning when Josie Driggers stole home. The Lady Tigers responded with four runs in the bottom half of the second inning to take a 7-4 lead. The Lady Tigers added two runs in the third inning. The Cowgirls managed to close the gap with two runs in the top half of the fourth inning before the Lady Tigers exploded with 11 runs in the bottom of the fourth. The game was called after the Cowgirls failed to score in the top of the fifth inning.
Driggers went two-for-two at the plate with one RBI. Halie Wetherington made her way onto the Cowgirls' “bomb squad,” going two-for-two in the batter's box with a two-run homer in her first at-bat of the contest. Carter Gore had two hits in her two trips to the plate with one RBI. Wetherington and Mackenzi Bochnia paired up in the pitcher's circle, giving up 15 hits, 12 earned runs and four walks. The pair of Cowgirl pitchers struck out three batters.
The Cowgirls are set to be back at Cowgirl Field on Tuesday, March 9, when they face North Florida Christian School, from Tallahassee. The first pitch is set for 6 p.m.
