After dropping the first three matches of the season, the Madison County High School (MCHS) varsity Cowgirls picked up their first win of the season when they defeated the Lady Trojans of Hamilton County High School, on Monday, Aug. 29, in the MCHS gymnasium.
In the first match of the evening, the junior varsity teams took the court. In the first set, the Cowgirls came out on top with a 25-20 score. The second set went back and forth with each team taking the lead before relinquishing it to their worthy opponent. The set went into extra points and, in the end, the Lady Trojans were edged out by the Cowgirls, 26-24. The match went to the Cowgirls in straight sets, 2-0.
Then the varsity teams took their places on the court. This match went a full five sets before the Cowgirls defeated the Lady Trojans, 3-2. The opening set went to the Cowgirls, 25-19. At the end of the second set, it looked as if the Cowgirls may sweep the match in straight sets. However, the Lady Trojans bounced back with the help of deadly accurate work from the serve line and the third set went to the Lady Trojans, 26-24. With renewed energy, the Lady Trojans were able to force a fifth and final set, taking the fourth set, 25-23. In the final set, the Cowgirls went out to an early lead and, despite a short rally by the Lady Trojans, were able to hold and finish with a 15-9 win.
Then, on Tuesday, Aug. 30, the Cowgirls carried the momentum from the previous evening back onto their home court when they defeated the Lady Cougars of Godby High School, from Tallahassee, 3-1. The Cowgirls dominated much of the first set, routing the Lady Cougars, 25-7. The second set was more evenly matched with
the Cowgirls taking the set, 25-22. The Lady Cougars avoided the shut-out by picking up a win in the third set, 25-21. The Cowgirls regained control of the match in the fourth set with an early lead, which they held throughout the set, which ended with a 25-16 Cowgirl win.
The Cowgirls will be back on their home court on Tuesday, Sept. 13, when they host the Lady Trojans of Brooks County (Ga.) High School. The varsity match is set to start at 6 p.m., in the MCHS gymnasium.
