The Madison County High School (MCHS) Cowgirls picked up their third straight district title on Friday, Feb. 3, by defeating the Red Flashes of Hillard High School, 46-36, in Branford, Fla. With the win, the Cowgirls progress to the “Sweet 16” Class 1A State Tournament.
The Cowgirls wasted little time in establishing their dominance, moving ahead to a 14-6 lead at the end of the first period. During the second quarter, each team kept pace and the score was 25-17 when the two teams broke for halftime.
During the third period, the Red Flashes began to mount a comeback and, at the end of the period, the Cowgirls were holding a slim 30-28 lead. Midway through the final period, Janiyah McKnight took the game upon her shoulders and began to lead the Cowgirls to a 46-36 victory.
