Curtis Lamar Pickles (affectionately known to family as ‘Squirt’), 57, of Lee, passed away unexpectedly from sepsis and multi-organ failure on Thursday, Oct.14, 2021, at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. Curtis was born on May 5, 1964, in Madison County Memorial Hospital.
Curtis was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved being outdoors. Although he had struggled with alcohol addiction in the past, he had successfully achieved sobriety for the past two consecutive years, which was an accomplishment he was very proud of. Curtis took great pride in being the primary caregiver for both his parents and he always made sure they were well taken care of. He loved working in the yard and doing outdoor projects to keep busy. Curtis was a very creative and artistic person, but he rarely shared that with others. He was a great cook and loved to grill and use his outside deep fryer for all the fish he caught. One of his best attributes was his sense of humor which will be deeply missed.
Before medically retiring, Curtis was a highly skilled heavy equipment operator and was well known in Madison County for his fearless approach to clearing properties and taking on dangerous terrain just because it was “fun.” He worked in Texas for Asplundh for many years, but always considered Lee his home. Curtis enjoyed helping his friends with projects around their properties and his heavy equipment skills came in very handy!
Curtis is survived by his loving parents, Maude and Harvey Pickles, of Lee; sisters, Teena Spikes and husband Darren, of Williston, Fla.; and Annette Turner and husband Sean, of Orlando, Fla.; Curtis is also survived by his son, Dillon, of Lake City, Fla.
Curtis loved his two brothers-in-law and enjoyed poking fun at them for their “luck” in meeting his sisters. He was “Uncle Curtis” to Stacy, Ashley and Dalton (Teena); and Zachary and Nicholas (Annette).
He was preceded in death by his older brother, Glen “Pick” Pickles.
If you wish to honor Curtis, please think about him, and say a little prayer when you are hunting, fishing or just riding through the woods. That would bring a smile to his face.
In keeping with Curtis’ expressed wishes, he will be cremated, and a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
