On June 4, 1929, Deacon William M. Wormack (“Mack”) was born in Madison, to his proud parents, Robert Wormack and Retha Lipscomb McGhee. He remained in Madison during his early years but relocated to Jacksonville, Fla. as an adult. Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Cora B. Wormack; son, William Wormack, Jr.; and sister, Cora Jones.
Celebration of life services, with COVID-19 restrictions, will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2021, on the lawn of Pineland Missionary Baptist Church, 205 SE Old County Camp Road, in Madison. A public viewing and visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 5, in the chapel of J.P. Moore Mortuary, 379 W. Base Street, in Madison, (850) 973-6677. Earthly bed of slumber: Oakridge No.1 Cemetery, in Madison.
Earlier in his life, Mack accepted Christ as his redeemer, and as he grew stronger in faith, he put his faith into action. He was a dedicated member of Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church, in Jacksonville. He was ordained as a deacon, and designated as trustee and served as president of Usher Board Number 1. He accepted each responsibility with the utmost honor and pride. He was also a Mason.
After Mack received his education at Madison County Training School, he enlisted in the US Army as a cook and served honorably in the Korean War. Afterwards, he later was gainfully employed at Mayport and Cecil Field Naval Air Stations, and other federal jobs, as well as his being a driver for McKessan – Robbins Medical Supply, and as a painter before his retirement.
In addition to his work ethic, Deacon Womack used his leisure time to fish or garden. He also enjoyed eating the fruits of his labor and other good foods. He especially loved to reminisce about his early years in Madison and about his love for his relatives.
Life’s race well run. On Monday, Oct. 25, 2021, Deacon William M. Wormack, Sr. answered the heavenly bugle call to enter eternal rest. Life’s work, well done.
Among those to cherish his life, legacy, and loving memory are his daughters, Fagarie Wormack and Sherrie Wormack, both of Jacksonville; son, Randy Ghent, of Madison; stepdaughters: Patricia (John) Ivory, of Jacksonville, and Dr. Pearl (Willie) Curry, of Madison; sister, Mary Tice, of Madison; grandchildren: Quarma Peacock, of Madison; Raevondala Ivory, of New Orleans, La.; and El Shanti Ivory; six great-grandchildren; along with numerous other sorrowing relatives, mournful church family and grieving friends.
