Mrs. Dorothy Pickels Newsome, age 98, of Northport, Ala., left this world for her heavenly home on July 2, 2021. She passed peacefully at her residence. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. on July 8, 2021, at Beggs Funeral Home, Madison Chapel, officiated by Rev. Jeremy Wicker. She will be laid to rest in the Oakridge Cemetery, in Madison.
Dorothy (Dot) is survived by her son Carl G. Newsome, Jr., and daughter-in-law Paula Dyess Newsome; four grandchildren: Tiffany Anne Newsome, Christopher J. Newsome (Susan), Autumn Lynn Newsome and Carl G. Newsome III; seven great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, William and Nancy Pickels; her Husband, Carl G. Newsome, Sr.; daughter, Betty Kathleen Newsome; brothers, Chandler Pickels and Arthur Pickels; sisters: Ethel Lamb, Florrie Garrett, Liza Williams (LC), Edna Lois Wainright and Gertrude “Trudy” Burnett.
Dot took her husband’s job at Van H. Priest store in Madison during WWII. Upon his return, she became a homemaker until he became ill, at which time she went to work at J.C. Penney, in Mobile, Ala. Dot was a very giving person and loved to take care of the needs of others. When she retired, she volunteered at the V.A. Hospital in Tuscaloosa, Ala. where she received many awards for her service. Newsome moved to Texas and she volunteered at New Hope Manor, in Cedar Park, Texas. She was a member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church, in Northport, Ala.
