Located at Pinetta Elementary School (PES), Caitlin Joiner is the second grade virtual teacher for the Madison County School District (MCSD). She uses a complete curriculum that is based on Florida Virtual School. Although her position is strictly for the second grade in the MCSD, Joiner has 20 second grade students from all four elementary schools.
Robin Hill, head of Curriculum and Instruction for the MCSD has approved the program, which includes students from PES, Lee Elementary, Greenville Elementary and Madison County Central School. Joiner follows a full lesson plan, including math, science, language arts and social studies. Students must also submit an online log of their physical education assignments.
To access her class, students and parents simply go to the MCSD website located at: www.madison.k12.fl.us and utilize the Canvas system. Additional information can be obtained from PES Curriculum Coordinator Christi Minor at (850) 973-5028.
A native of Live Oak, Joiner graduated from Suwannee High School in 2014 and the University of Central Florida in 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. She teaches dance part-time at "Danceology," in Live Oak, which she has done for six years. She is married to Bo Joiner and resides in Madison.
Previously, Joiner was a migrant paraprofessional for the Suwannee County School District in Live Oak. Joiner obtained her temporary certification from the state which allows her to teach virtually for the MCSD while she completes her requirements to receive her Professional Educator Certificate.
Students in her class operate with a specific schedule and curriculum. Typically, each student is being kept home because of COVID, which is why she has students from across the district. "My students are from all the schools, even though I'm housed at PES," said Joiner. "Most of my students are actually from the Central School. Each [one] is very special to me though, and each [one] is receiving a complete education."
