Former Aucilla Christian Academy (ACA) student and Monticello resident, Matt Dobson, is enjoying his time on the other side of the ball as an Assistant Football Coach at Cook County High School in Adel, Ga. A 2012 graduate of North Florida Christian School (NFCS), in Tallahassee, Dobson attended ACA until the eighth grade.
After graduating from NFCS, Dobson went on to play football at Georgia Southern University (GSU), where he was a stand out defensive back and part of the team that upset the University of Florida Gators 26-20 in Gainesville in 2013, which was during Dobson's Sophomore year. When asked about that game, he laughed and said “Yeah, that was pretty sweet.” According to Dobson, another highlight of his college career was when GSU won the Sun Belt Conference championship during his Junior year. Dobson was also named the GoDaddy Bowl Special Teams MVP for scooping up a blocked PAT and returning it 95 yards for a two point score. Dobson was also one of 197 players from across all divisions nationwide to be up for the 2015 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.
Dobson graduated from GSU this year, earning a B.A. in history. In addition to coaching, Dobson teaches social studies, world history, and american government. When asked about being a young teacher, only a few years older than his students, Dobson replied, “I think it helps me relate [to the students] with the tough parts and the good parts. I know what they're going through, since I was still playing just a few months ago.”
Dobson is the son of Terry and Ronda Dobson, both of Monticello. He is the grandson of Ron and Martha Smoak, of Madison, and George and Loa Lee Dobson, of Greenville. He is a member of the Madison Landmark Baptist Church.
