Former Madison County High School (MCHS) defensive coordinator Kirkland Mitchell has been named the head football coach for the Hamilton County High School (HCHS) Trojans. This will be a homecoming for Coach Mitchell, a graduate of HCHS. "I'm excited to return home," said Coach Mitchell. "This is my dream job and I have wanted it since I was in the 11th grade and wanted to become a coach. I am thankful for this opportunity and for the people who have supported me. I look forward to a resurgence in our program and can't wait to get started."
Coach Mitchell began his coaching career at HCHS before joining MCHS Head Coach Mike Coe's staff in 2017. During the Cowboys' 2019 state championship season, Coach Mitchell's defensive squad chalked up four shut-outs, 19 interceptions, 42 sacks and 147 tackles-for-loss. This was accomplished with a young defensive team that many thought would be in a "re-building" mode during the season.
"We are excited about what Coach Mitchell brings to the table, not only as a football coach, but as an individual to lead our young men," said HCHS Principal Donnie Harrison. "He is passionate about his work on the field and in the classroom and to have a coach of his caliber want this job is an opportunity we could not pass up."
Last season, the Trojans had a 1-9 record. The Trojans are set to begin their 2020 campaign with the kickoff classic at Interlochen on Friday, Aug. 14.
