Brittany Hasty has taken advantage of each opportunity that has come her way since she was frequently seen on the sidelines of Boot Hill stadium, working as an assistant trainer for the football team and on the hardwoods at Madison County High School (MCHS) playing basketball for the MCHS Cowgirls. Hasty was recently named the new Head Women’s Basketball Coach for Johnson University, in Kissimmee, Fla.
After graduating from MCHS and completing her A.A. degree from North Florida College, in 2020, Hasty went to Ohio Valley University (OVU), in West Virginia, on an athletic scholarship to play basketball and softball. Hasty earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from OVU, then went to Salem University on a graduate assistantship. It was here that Hasty learned much of the work that goes into coaching at the collegiate level. While she was working on her master’s degree at Salem University, Hasty helped coach the women’s basketball team, coached the junior varsity team, and worked closely with the athletic director there. With her Master of Science in Human Health Performance in hand, from Salem University, Hasty began seeking coaching opportunities. She found Johnson University (JU), a small Christian school in Kissimmee, Fla., near Orlando. Hasty was familiar with Johnson University from their campus in Tennessee. Johnson University in Tennessee had recruited Hasty to play basketball there.
Hasty takes over a young JU team that struggled last season, ending the season with a 2-18 overall record. The team only graduated one senior, with five sophomores and freshmen on a team with eight on the total roster. “I know it’s going to be a big step,” said Hasty. “Recruiting is going to be a big part of our future success. I am going to be looking for young women who are coachable. I would much rather have a two-star player who is coachable than a five-star player who comes in thinking they know it all.”
Even though Hasty is going to be striving for success on the hardwoods, she knows coaching involves much more than Xs and Os. “My goal is to minister [to the athletes] through sport,” stated Hasty. Hasty will also soon begin work on her doctorate in leadership.
Hasty is currently helping with tutoring in Hamilton County, where her mother is a school administrator. She is also busy on the recruiting trail for the JU Suns.
She is the daughter of Jeff and Peggy Hasty, of Madison.
