For more than 150 years, tobacco was a chief agricultural product in north Florida. While Gadsden County is often associated with shade-grown tobacco, Madison County also contributed to this industry, as it was one of the only places in the United States, along with Gadsden County, that was suitable for the growing of this crop. In 1946, these two counties produced over 95 percent of American-grown wrapper leaf and represented a $100,000,000 industry of which $25,000,000 was invested in the operating capital in the Georgia-Florida area.
Let's take a look at Fraleigh Tobacco Company, which operated within Madison County.
