One of many parts of my job that I thoroughly enjoy is the fact that I am able to come visit with you every week. I get to speak my mind on pretty much anything, even when I really don't have anything on my mind. Today, I do have something on my mind.
I'm sure I am not the only person around who is growing quite weary of this virus thing. I know that it has spread around the world and has impacted everyone. I know there have been people who have lost their lives to this sickness. I am truly sorry for those people who have gotten sick and even more sorry for those who have lost their lives and for the families of those people. With all that being said, I can't help but think that there are a lot of people who have thrown the proverbial baby out with the bathwater. I have seen a lot of silliness that I don't think is based much in science and even less in common sense. Can anyone explain to me how planting a tomato seed in Michigan is going to make anyone more likely to get sick?
I went to the grocery store recently and the aisles were marked as one-way. I have to say, that is where I draw my line. With my bum ankle, I refuse to hobble all the way down one aisle and halfway up another just to get a box of Captain Crunch cereal. The grocery store traffic cops can write me a ticket if they want, I'm just not going to play along with that particular game. I honestly don't see how the direction of my limp has anything to do with spreading some plague. If someone else wants to travel twice as far as they need to by following the one-way signs on the floor of the grocery store, that's okay for them. They have the freedom to do that.
That's what is still so groovy about living here. We enjoy that odd concept of freedom. If folks wanna eat a sandwich in the air-conditioned comfort of Norris Cafe, they should be able to do that. If air-conditioned comfort scares you, then nobody is going to force you to eat inside (or rather they shouldn't force you to). Same thing with wearing a mask. If it makes you feel better to wear a mask, then please wear a mask. I don't see that for myself, but I won't stop anyone else. In fact, with some folks, I wouldn't mind it at all if they wore a mask even after the plague has cleared.
I still plan to be nice to everyone, no matter what direction they are walking down the grocery aisle, or if they are wearing a mask or not. This virus thing WILL fade away, and when it does, I am convinced that we will look back and say, "Gosh, that was a huge over-reaction." Even after the plague clears, I hope that being nice will be a lasting side-effect.
