One of the staples of the holiday season is a fruitcake. Although there can be some debate on the merits of fruitcake, there is one point on which there is little debate. Some of the best fruitcakes in town can be found at Madison Church of God.
It has become a holiday tradition for the church to sell fruitcakes. “We've had to raise our prices a little because the price of the ingredients has gone up,” said Mike Kirkland, one of the volunteers baking the cakes. “But we still have people come to buy them. A lot of the same people buy cakes from us every year. Some people who claim they don't like fruitcakes say they like ours.”
There are three different sizes from which to choose: a one-pound cake, just big enough for one person, is $15; a two-pound cake, which sells for $20 and a five-pound cake, which carries a $40 price tag. Money raised through the fruitcake sales go toward various building and maintenance projects at the church, such as paving the driveway and other needs as they arise.
