Donna Law is no stranger to cancer. She became all too familiar with the devastation this cruel disease can bring when her husband passed away in 2009, at the end of his fight with brain cancer. At that point in time, Law experienced first-hand the kind of economic hardship the disease can dish out. Suddenly, Law was faced with being a single parent, with two children under the age of ten. But Law decided to turn her tears into triumph. Exhausting the last few pennies still remaining in her savings, along with a modest life insurance policy, Law returned to school to attain her graduate degree in teaching so she could provide for her family.
Law is in her seventh year of a successful teaching career at James Madison Preparatory High School (JMPHS), where she has earned the love, respect and admiration of students, colleagues and administrators alike. “She is a phenomenal teacher,” said JMPHS Principal Mark Akerman. It came as no surprise to anyone when Law was named JMPHS Teacher of the Year earlier this year.
A few weeks ago, Law began to experience abdominal pain. Upon further examination, a cancerous tumor was discovered on Law's uterus. Surgery was performed to remove as much of the cancer as possible, but Law still faces a tough battle ahead with her treatments. All this has only added to Law's financial burden. In order to help, JMPHS has begun a fundraising campaign in order to help the beloved science teacher. “We cannot fight the battle for her, but what we can do is help alleviate the financial burden that accompanies cancer so that Mrs. Law can focus 100 percent of her attention on getting stronger and returning to her students,” said one of the campaign organizers.
A GoFundMe campaign has been started by JMPHS. To donate to the GoFundMe campaign go to https://www.gofundme.com/donna-law-jmphs. Those interested may also donate through an account which has been set up at Buckeye Community Credit Union. Simply inform them you are making a donation to Donna Law's fundraising campaign and you will receive a receipt for your donation. The school will be informed of everyone who donates so that proper gratitude can be expressed.
Law lives in Jennings, Fla. and is a 1983 graduate of Hamilton County High School. She has two children, Hannah and Jeremy, both of whom graduated from JMPHS.
