If you are new to Madison, you may not be aware that golf carts are allowed on the streets of the City of Madison, with a few rules and restrictions that apply. Golf carts are a great way for residents to travel about town, and they use much less fuel than cars or trucks. Listed below are some of the requirements for operating a golf cart on the streets of Madison. Operators must also comply with Florida Statute 316.212, which has the remainder of the requirements for safe use of golf carts on the roadways. The statute is available for viewing online from numerous websites.
All persons operating golf carts must possess a valid Florida driver's license and carry liability insurance covering the operation of such golf cart in an amount of not less than $10,000. Golf carts must be registered and permitted through the Madison Police Department (MPD). Applications are available from City Clerk Lee Anne Hall. When the application is complete, along with the required proof of insurance, the MPD will issue a permit in the form of a decal, which should be applied to the rear of the cart in a manner that is clearly visible. The permit is not transferable to another cart. The fee for the permit is $25, and it must be renewed annually at the same rate.
Anyone operating a golf cart does so at their own risk and assumes sole responsibility and liability for that operation. Drivers should regard the safety of other motorists and pedestrians while operating golf carts, and they are subject to all traffic regulations that apply to normal motorized vehicles. Furthermore, the City of Madison will not be held responsible for any claims, demands or lawsuits arising from the operation of golf carts in the City of Madison. Once these rules are complied with, it's time to hop in your golf cart and enjoy a leisurely and inexpensive stroll through the streets of Madison.
