The Senior Citizens Council of Madison County, Inc., located at 1161 SW Harvey Greene Drive in Madison, is a lively place to be on any given afternoon around 11:45 p.m. The dining room fills with laughter and conversation as anywhere from 30 to 40 hungry individuals file in, equally excited for the delicious lunch as they are the good company.
Patricia McGhee, who is affectionately referred to as “Mrs. Pat” by folks around the Council, is the Nutritional
Manager. She makes sure there is a nutritional and delicious lunch prepared five days a week for the daily congregate meal. Vans are available to pick up seniors who cannot drive, and they service the entire county. The Council also delivers meals to those seniors who are homebound. Meals on Wheels, as most know the program, delivers hot meals to elders whose medical condition prevents them from attending the on-site meal. According to the Council, the home-delivered meals give seniors a “visit of socialization, protection, and assurance.”
On Thursday, Feb. 23, the mood was jovial in the Council's dining hall. Johnny McGhee, who has been eating at the congregate meals for “quite some time,” said he's not picky about the food, but he comes for the company. The nearly 30 seniors in the room appeared to be a family, and their sense of fellowship was obvious.
Anyone interested in receiving home-delivered meals or attending the congregate meals can contact the Council at (850) 973-4241.
